Christmas Eve Preamble
Español: La Navidad es llamado a la comunidad para recordar sus orígenes con el inicios de Jesús en forma humana, un profeta del reino de Dios, un juicio sobre el mundo y sus proyectos. Lo que celebramos durante esta temporada no es principalmente su cumpleaños, sino los inicios de una fase decisiva en la historia tempestuosa del proyecto de Dios hacia la humanidad. Las preocupaciones sociales de la temporada están arraigadas en la proclamación de Jesús sobre el reino de Dios: la renuncia de los patrones que oprimen a los demás y la formación de una nueva comunidad que abraza estas renuncias. English: Christmas calls a community back to its origins by remembering Jesus’ own beginnings as a human child, a prophet of God’s reign, a judgment on the world and its projects. What the parish celebrates during this season is not primarily a birthday, but the beginnings of a decisive new phase in the tempertuous history of God’s hunger for human companions. The social concerns of the season are thus rooted in Jesus’ proclamation of God’s reign: the renunciation of patterns that oppress others (holding, climbing, commanding) and the formation of a new human community that voluntarily embraces those renunciations. It is an adult Christ that the community encounters during the Advent and Christmas cycles of Sundays and feasts: a Risen [One] who invites … people to become church. Christmas does not ask us to pretend we were back in Bethlehem, kneeling before a crib; it asks us to recognize that the wood of the crib became the wood of the cross. –Nathan Mitchell

Nuestra liturgia incluye plegarias, himnos y narraciones en ambos idiomas: nuestro equipo de dirección litúrgica ha tratado de alcanzar un balance que sea sensible a toda persona que nos visite. Our service includes prayers, songs and stories in both languages: our team of worship leaders has tried to strike a balance that will be welcoming to all who attend. Our congregations strive to be accessible, active vibrant, justice seeking, queer positive communities in the heart of downtown Toronto. We are used to different levels of participation. At the Peace we move about freely, greeting one another. During the offertory hymn we move to create a circle around the altar. Space is provided for members of the congregation to offer spoken petitions during the Prayers of the People. Everyone is welcome to receive the bread and wine at the time of communion. We are delighted to have you with us this evening and we invite everyone to participate at their level of comfort.

The Welcome/La Bienvenida
Posada Ritual
Las Posadas is a Mexican tradition of traveling as pilgrims from house to house.
Tonight, a small group representing Mary, Joseph, and the pilgrims will go outside and knock at the East Door, the South Door and the West Door. The “innkeepers” (the rest of us) will stay inside the church and move from door to door in candlelight. At each door, they will sing a song in the hopes of being let in and the rest of us will respond, finally being let in at the West Door.

The Innkeepers will allow the Pilgrims to come through the door. As the pilgrims enter, everyone sings:
Translation: In the name of heaven, I ask you for a place to stay, because my beloved wife cannot walk.
This is not an inn, keep looking,

Don’t be inhuman, have pity on us, and the God of heaven will reward you.
You can go already and not bother us because if I become angry I am going to beat you with a stick. My wife is Mary, she is the Queen of Heaven, and she is going to be the mother of the Divine Word. Are you Joseph? And your wife is Mary? Come in, pilgrims. I didn’t recognize you.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word was in the beginning with God.
All things came into being through the Word, and without the Word not one thing came into being. What has come into being in the Word was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light.
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. The light was in the world, but the world did not recognize the one through whom it was made. Thus the Word entered God’s own domain, but was not accepted by God’s own people.
But all who did receive the Word were empowered to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human desire or will – but born from God.
And the Word became flesh and lived among, and we have seen the glory, the glory as of a Mother’s only child, full of grace and truth.
