Christmas Eve Preamble
–Nathan Mitchell.

English: Christmas calls a community back to its origins by remembering Jesus’ own beginnings as a human child, a prophet of God’s reign, a judgment on the world and its projects.  What the parish celebrates during this season is not primarily a birthday, but the beginnings of a decisive new phase in the tempertuous history of God’s hunger for human companions.  The social concerns of the season are thus rooted in Jesus’ proclamation of God’s reign: the renunciation of patterns that oppress others (holding, climbing, commanding) and the formation of a new human community that voluntarily embraces those renunciations.  It is an adult Christ that the community encounters during the Advent and Christmas cycles of Sundays and feasts: a Risen [One] who invites … people to become church.  Christmas does not ask us to pretend we were back in Bethlehem, kneeling before a crib; it asks us to recognize that the wood of the crib became the wood of the cross.  –Nathan Mitchell

Our service includes prayers, songs and stories in both languages: our team of worship leaders has tried to strike a balance that will be welcoming to all who attend. Our congregations strive to be accessible, active vibrant, justice seeking, queer positive communities in the heart of downtown Toronto. We are used to different levels of participation.  At the Peace we move about freely, greeting one another. During the offertory hymn we move to create a circle around the altar.  Space is provided for members of the congregation to offer spoken petitions during the Prayers of the People.  Everyone is welcome to receive the bread and wine at the time of communion.   We are delighted to have you with us this evening and we invite everyone to participate at their level of comfort.

The Welcome/La Bienvenida

Posada Ritual

Las Posadas is a Mexican tradition of traveling as pilgrims from house to house.
Tonight, a small group representing Mary, Joseph, and the pilgrims will go outside and knock at the East Door, the South Door and the West Door. The “innkeepers” (the rest of us) will stay inside the church and move from door to door in candlelight. At each door, they will sing a song in the hopes of being let in and the rest of us will respond, finally being let in at the West Door.

East Door

South Door

West Door

The Innkeepers will allow the Pilgrims to come through the door. As the pilgrims enter, everyone sings:

Translation: In the name of heaven, I ask you for a place to stay, because my beloved wife cannot walk.
This is not an inn, keep looking,
I can’t open, you might be a rogue!
Don’t be inhuman, have pity on us, and the God of heaven will reward you.
You can go already and not bother us because if I become angry I am going to beat you with a stick. My wife is Mary, she is the Queen of Heaven, and she is going to be the mother of the Divine Word. Are you Joseph? And your wife is Mary? Come in, pilgrims. I didn’t recognize you.

Enter Holy Pilgrims, Pilgrims.Receive this corner, although the dwelling is small, I give it with my heart. Let us sing with joy, joy, everyone, to think that Jesus, Joseph, and Mary, came to honor us today.
Hymn/Himno: “What Child is This?”
English: W.C. Dix,  adapted Ian Sowton

What Child is This?

1. What child is this who, laid to rest,
on Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
while shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ we sing,
whom shepherds worship and angels ring:
Haste, haste to bring our praise,
the Babe, the child of Mary

2. Why lies the babe in mean estate
where ox and ass are feeding?
So all might know the overflow
of Love all loves exceeding.
This, this is Christ we sing,
whom shepherds worship and angels ring:
Haste, haste to bring our praise,
the Babe, the child of Mary

3. Then come who wish, approach in hope
since none to Christ is stranger,
Come draw you near, bring gifts to cheer
and bless this holy manger;
This, this is Christ we sing,
whom shepherds worship and angels ring:
Haste, haste to bring our praise,
the Babe, the child of Mary

The Proclamation of the Word         Proclamación De La Palabra

Collect of the Day: Let us pray:[silence]
All: Divine Midwife, as you oversee the birth of the universe, you wrap the outcast ones in the cloth of your steadfast love; and the sign of your coming peace is justice longed for, felt and done. Empower us to set aside greed and comfort; that, turning from the ways we oppress others, we discover our oneness with you and all humanity; through Jesus Christ, we pray Amen.
(Mary Kathleen Speegle Schmidt)
Colecta: Oramos: [silencio]
Amen

First Reading: Isaiah 9:2-7
Reader: Len Desroches

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; light has shined on those who have existed in a land of deep shadow. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you, as with joy at the harvest, or as people rejoice when they divide their profits. For as on the day of freedom from Midian, you have again broken the yoke of their burdens, snapped the bar weighing down their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. Every boot of every tramping warrior, and every garment stained in blood shall be discarded, burned as fuel for the fire. For a child is born to us, a child given to us upon whose shoulders sits authority, who is called “Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Origin, Regent of Peace”; whose authority shall grown continually, and the land where David held sway shall be a place pf endless peace. This child shall establish it and sustain it with justice and righteousness from this time onward and for evermore. The zeal of the God of hosts will do all this.

Reader:  Hear what the Spirit says to God’s                            people
All:           Thanks be to God.                            [silence]

Hymn/Himno: “In the Heart of Love Begotten”
English: Jim Cotter, Español: Federico Pagura
1.  In the heart of Love, begotten – ere the world from chaos rose,
You are Alpha: from that Fountain – all that is and has been flows:
You are Omega, of all things – yet to come the mystic Close: Evermore and evermore.

2.  Fruto del amor divino – génesis de la creación;

3.  O how blest is Mary, Mother, she the first who new believed,
Brought to birth the world’s salvation, by the Holy Ghost conceived;
And the Babe, the True Redeemer, in her loving arms received: Evermore and evermore.

4.  Las legiones celestiales – ahora canten su loor;
los dominios hoy le adoren – como Rey y rendetor;

5. Sing, O earth and seas, God’s praises, sun and storms and sounding shore,
Streams and forest, faithful people, day and night the Christ adore,
Born for us and all creation through  a Love for ever sure: Evermore and evermore.

Epistle: Titus 3:4-7
Reader: Jorge Roncal
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. \

Reader:  Hear what the Spirit says to the Churches
All:           Thanks be to God.

Hymn/Himno: “The Midwife’s Carol”        music: Becca Whitla
words: Ian Sowton, November 1994
1.The birth itself was not too hard
good presentation, fine strong mum
but my dear it was a circus
I thought that half the town had come
lo bañamos, lo secamos,
le cantamos al dormir, al dormir

2. There were these shepherds who burst in
my dear they said a talking light
told them to come and pay respects–
kneeling, they were, to that wee mite

3. He’s breathing well, the cord’s tied off,
her afterbirth’s come free, my dear
when three fine scholar blokes squeeze in
saying a star had brought them here

4. You selling tickets then? I said
buzz off you lot and let her rest
and they did, too, leaving presents
rich stuff my dear, the very best

5. All that public to and fro-ing
she watches as it comes and goes
with him tucked, dear, in a manger
pulled from under the donkey’s nose.

6. Winter solstice ‘twas my dear
shivery damp and animal stink
worship, palaver, gifts and all
what was going on do you think?

Holy Gospel John 1:1-14          Evangelio Santo: Juan 1:1-14

The Holy Gospel will be read antiphonally in both languages
Reader:    May God be with you.
All:            And also with you.
Lectora:           El Evangelio del nacimiento de Jesucristo, según San Juan
Todos:            Gloria a tí, Jesús Salvador.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word was in the beginning with God.

All things came into being through the Word, and without the Word not one thing came into being. What has come into being in the Word was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light.

The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. The light was in the world, but the world did not recognize the one through whom it was made. Thus the Word entered God’s own domain, but was not accepted by God’s own people.

But all who did receive the Word were empowered to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human desire or will – but born from God.

And the Word became flesh and lived among, and we have seen the glory, the glory as of a Mother’s only child, full of grace and truth.

Todos: Te damos gracias y alabanzas

O Eternal Wisdom, we praise you and give you thanks, because you emptied yourself of power
and became weakness for our sake; for on this night you were delivered as one of us, a baby needy and naked; born into poverty and exile, to proclaim good news to the poor, and to let broken victims go free.

Therefore, with the woman who gave you birth,
the women who befriended you and fed you,
who argued with you and touched you,
the woman who anointed you for death,
the women who met you, risen from the dead,
and with all who have loved you throughout the ages,    we praise you, singing:
Oh eternal Sabiduria, te alabamos y te damos gracias, porque te has despojado de tu poder
y te has hecho débil por nosotros; pues en esta noche, tú has sido enviado como uno de nosotros,
como un niño en necesidad y desnudo;

Blessed is our brother Jesus, bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh; who, on the night when he was delivered over to death, took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said: “Take and eat: this is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
After supper,  Jesus took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith.

All: Christ has died. Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

Come, then, life-giving Spirit of our God, brood over these bodily things, and make us one body in Christ; that we may labour together to bring forth the reign of peace. Through Jesus Christ, the firstborn of the new creation, who with you our God,  in the bond of the Eternal Wisdom, orders all things for good.

All     Amen.

Silent Night     by Joseph Mohr

1. Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright
round yon blessed mother and child. Holy infant so tender and mild,
sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace!

2. Silent night! Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight:
glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing Alleluia,
Christ, the Saviour is born, Christ, the Saviour is born.

3. Silent night! Holy night! Child of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Christ, at thy birth, Jesus, Christ, at thy birth.

Presider: God of all, we thank you for coming among us tonight. May we who have received the gift of your presence in a Child and in the sharing of bread and wine be a gift to others. Amen.

All:        Glory to God, whose power working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God, from generation to generation in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn/Himno: Joy to the World/ Gozo Del Mundo Es El Señor
Isaac Watts 1674-1748,  melody from G.F. Handel, 1685-1759, adapted by Lowell Mason 1792-1872

“Joy to the World”

1. Joy to the World! the Christ is come; let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare him room, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

2. Joy to the earth! the Saviour reigns: let us our songs employ,
while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains repeat the sounding joy.

3. No more let sins and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the ground;
The Christ will make God’s blessing flow far as the curse is found.

4. God rules the earth with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove
the glories of God’s righteousness and wonders of God’s love.
