Sixth Sunday After Epiphany

This week we join remotely due to the snowfall across the city, please join our virtual circle as we read from Jeremiah, a poem by Scott L. Barton, and the Gospel According to Luke. The homily is offered by Bill Whitla and explores the contrast between blessings and woes in Luke’s Sermon on the Plain, emphasizing how Jesus’ message differs from fire-and-brimstone preaching. It discusses the reversal of social standing, where the poor are blessed and the rich face warnings, not merely based on wealth but on their social position and dependence on others. The sermon highlights Jesus’ mission to restore dignity to the outcast and challenges the congregation to consider their role in an increasingly unequal world. Ultimately, it calls for community, compassion, and the pursuit of justice through faith.
