Toronto for a Nuclear Weapons-Free World

The Hiroshima Day Coalition is organizing the commemoration  “TORONTO FOR A NUCLEAR WEAPONS-FREE WORLD” on Thursday August 9, 2012 (Nagasaki Day) at the Church of the Holy Trinity. المراهنة على المباريات

The commemoration starts at 6.15 p.m. Rev. Sherman Hesselgrave will give a welcome from the Church, Joy Kogawa will read the peace message from Nagasaki and Metta Spencer will have a display table for Peace Magazine.

Peggy Nash, Finance critic for the New Democratic Party, will speak about the NDP’s policy on nuclear weapons and what an NDP government would do to implement the unanimous, all-party resolution passed by Parliament in 2010 that called on the Government of Canada to join negotiations for a nuclear weapons convention. The resolution called on the Government to “deploy a major world-wide Canadian diplomatic initiative in support of preventing nuclear proliferation and increasing the rate of nuclear disarmament.”

Ilario Maiolo, Senior Legal Advisor, Humanitarian Issues, for the Canadian Red Cross, will speak about the appeal to the international community by the Red Cross to abolish nuclear weapons because of the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons.

Also, from August 8 to 11, there will be a HIROSHIMA, NAGASAKI POSTER & SURVIVORS’ ARTWORK EXHIBIT
At the Toronto City Hall Rotunda, 100 Queen Street West, Wednesday to Friday – 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday – 10 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
