Cookie Monster

Jim Houston

A loud, urgent knocking.
We hurry to open the door.
A large, bulging shopping bag at my feet.
We call “Thank you!”
The figure retreating down the corridor turns and waves,
eyes smiling above her covid mask.

Our lovely “Cookie Monster” has struck again!

In “normal” times Lorry Lyons would have spent her Thursdays cooking for a meal programme at Danforth East United Church. But for the duration of this abnormal time, she has stayed home a few floors below us baking Thursday cookies for our take-out lunches at Holy Trinity. 12 dozen every week. In four different flavours. (The Skor chip ones are to die for).

We quickly send her an email: “Mmmmm! thank you.”
