Epiphany Sunday: January 3, 2010

Incumbent: The Rev’d  Sherman  Hesselgrave
Music Director: Becca Whitla     Coordinator: Carole Clark
Celebrant: Bill Whitla     Deacon: Joyce Barnett

Welcome to the Church of the Holy Trinity.  We are delighted to have you with us this morning. Holy Trinity is an accessible, active, vibrant, justice-seeking, queer-positive community in the heart of downtown Toronto. We try to use language in our worship which includes us all, and we encourage the extensive participation of each person in the worship and life of the Church. At the Peace we move about freely, greeting one another. During the offertory hymn we will move to create a circle around the altar for the Prayers of the People.  All are welcome to share in the Eucharist as they feel comfortable. To help you know Holy Trinity better, and to help you navigate through this service, be sure you have one of the handouts, Welcome to the Church of the Holy Trinity. A special welcome Newcomers!!!! Please fill out the Newcomers Form which will let us know how to reach you.

✜ Welcome
✜ Opening Meditation
After the opening meditation, we move to the west door, singing…
✜ Opening hymn
“Angels We Have Heard on High”

1. Angels we have hear on high, sweetly singing o’er the plains,
And the mountains in reply, echo back their joyous strains.
Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo.

2. Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong?
Say what may the tidings be, which inspire your heavenly song.
Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo.

3. See the babe in manger laid whom the choirs of angels praise;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, while our hearts in love we raise.
Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo.

✜ Entrance Rite for Epiphany: Blessing of Chalk
One:    Arise, shine; for your light has come,
All:    And the glory of God has risen among you.
One:    May God be with you.
All:    And also with you.
One:     Loving God, in your child Jesus Christ you clothed yourself with human flesh and revealed to us the holiness of all of your creation.  Bless this chalk, and grant that we who mark the doorways of our households, on this Feast of the Epiphany, may welcome all people with a blessed hospitality; we ask this in the name of the One who came to share your reign of compassion and justice.
All:     Amen.

Chalk is distributed for the blessing of households in the Parish.

✜ Blessing Litany at the Entrance Way
One:    May God give blessing
All:    To this place and all who enter here.
One:    May all who gather here give blessing
All:    To this place and all who enter here.
One:    Both crest and frame
All:    Both stone and beam.
One:    Both window and timber.
All:    Both foot and head.

One:     God of all glory, by your guidance you led the Magi to
Bethlehem by a star.  As Mary and Joseph treasured the
precious gifts which the travelers offered, may we  welcome
the gifts of all who gather here with warmth and friendship. Amen.
One:     May God watch over our going out and our coming in
All:    From this time forth and forevermore. Amen.

It is our custom to move about to exchange the peace. Please be mindful that it is flu season. Concerns about flu mean some people are uncomfortable shaking hands and/or hugging.  A smile and nod, or the sign of peace “V” are other suggested alternatives.

One:     The Peace of Christ be always with you:
All:     And also with you.

PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD

✜ Collect for the Day: O God of light and peace, whose glory, shining in the child of Bethlehem, still draws the nations to yourself; dispel the darkness that shrouds our path, that we may come to kneel before Christ in true worship, offer him our hearts and souls, and return from his presence to live as he has taught. AMEN.

✜ The Hebrew Scripture: Isaiah 60:1-6
after the reading
Reader:     Hear what the Spirit says to God’s people
All:     Thanks be to God

✜ Hymn  (all rise, in body or spirit for the hymn and Gospel):

Kings: We three kings of Orient are bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain following yonder star

Chorus: O Star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy Perfect Light

Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain, gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never, over us all to rein
Chorus
Frankincense to offer have I, incense owns a Deity nigh
Prayer and praising, voices raising, worshipping God on high.
Chorus
Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume breathes of life of gathering gloom
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone-cold tomb
Chorus
Glorious now behold Him arise, King and God and Sacrifice
Alleluia, Alleluia,  Earth to heav’n replies
Chorus

✜ Holy Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12
Reader: May God be with you    All: And also with you
Reader:  The Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew
All:      Glory to Christ our Saviour
after the reading
Reader: The Gospel of Christ     All: Praise to Christ our Saviour

✜ Homily:    Carole Clark

LITURGY OF THE BREAD AND CUP
We gather in a circle around the altar to share the gifts of bread
and wine and other offerings, the symbols of our common life.  All
are welcome. You may also remain seated and, if you wish, communion will be brought to you. Financial offerings will also be received.  You may also join the many who give by Pre-authorized Donation; simply request a PAD form from today’s Coordinator.

✜ Offertory Hymn: “The First Nowell”    Traditional English Carol

1. The first Nowell, the angel did say,
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Refrain: Nowell , Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,
Born in a manger Emmanuel.

2. They looked up and saw a star
shining in the east, beyond them far,
And to the earth it gave great light,
and so it continued both day and night. Refrain

3. And by the light of that same star
Three sages came from country far,
To seek for a king was their intent,
and to follow that star wherever it went. Refrain

4. The star shone bright in the northwest,
o’er Bethlehem it seemed to rest,
And there it did both stop and stay,
right over the place where Jesus lay.    Refrain

5. Then entered in those magi three,
and bending low upon their knee,
They offered there, in great reverence,
their gold and myrrh and frankincense. Refrain

✜Prayers of the People: In our prayers today, we remember: in the Anglican Cycle: the Anglican Church of Australia; in the Diocesan Cycle: . The community now offers its prayers, both spoken and unspoken. Please keep your prayers brief.

✜ The Great Thanksgiving (see orange book)    Presider: Bill Whitla
Please do not dip the bread into the wine. The bread and wine will be passed around the circle, but if you prefer you may receive at the gluten-free station at the altar.

✜The Saviour’s Prayer O God, our Mother and Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your reign come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
✜ Communion Hymn:

✜Glory to God: Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God, from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. AMEN.

✜ Closing Hymn: “When Heaven’s Bright With Mystery”    #93
✜ Dismissal

Dear Friends: A couple of weeks ago I updated you on the strategic planning process for Holy Trinity. One of the task groups was working on a draft mission and vision statement. They have considered the feedback from the Saturday morning of the World Cafe Vestry Weekend and subsequent conversations and offer the following statements as a starting place for further dialogue. The planning group hopes to bring a mission & vision statement to the February Vestry for ratification.
There are two other groups working on a values statement and a statement of strategic directions, which will be brought forward once we have achieved some consensus on mission & vision. Please share your reactions with the committee by passing them on to Chris Lind or Sherman Hesselgrave so we can all see how this is unfolding.
